What Is Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening is one of Dental Excellence’s most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures. This non-invasive procedure safely removes stains and discoloration caused by everyday foods, drinks, tobacco use, and the natural aging process. Most patients can achieve a noticeably brighter smile in just one visit, making professional whitening one of the quickest and most effective ways to enhance your appearance.
Unlike many over-the-counter whitening products, professional teeth whitening is customized to your individual needs. Our team carefully evaluates your oral health, selects the appropriate whitening treatment, and helps you achieve beautiful, natural-looking results safely and comfortably.
How Is Teeth Whitening Done?
Every smile is different, so the whitening process depends on the condition of your teeth and the type of discoloration being treated. During your consultation, your dentist will determine which professional whitening method is best for helping you achieve your desired results.
There are two types of teeth whitening, depending on if it’s being applied to a living tooth or a cap or crown.
Vital Whitening
This is for teeth with living nerves. First, your dentist will apply a protective substance to the gums. Then, they’ll apply the whitening substance, usually a hygienic gel, directly to the tooth’s surface. It sits for 30-90 minutes, depending on how stained the teeth are.
If you have severe discolorations or stains, we may take impressions of your upper and lower teeth and create a custom mouthpiece, which allows you to complete follow-up whitening at home. This is under our supervision, and we’ll help you repeat the process until we’ve achieved your desired results.
Non-Vital Whitening
This is the procedure for “dead teeth,” or ones without a living root inside. This can include teeth that have had a root canal, where the root is replaced. In these cases, the discoloration often comes from the inside and not necessarily stains on the outside. Normal whitening gel won’t have an effect on these teeth, so your dentist applies a whitening gel inside the tooth and then creates a temporary filling over it. The gel stays inside the tooth for a few days, and then we’ll check the whiteness to see how successful it was.
What Causes Tooth Discoloration?
Tooth discoloration happens naturally over time, but certain lifestyle habits and health factors can cause teeth to darken more quickly. Understanding what causes staining can help you protect your smile and maintain whitening results longer.
- Smoking or chewing tobacco can turn your teeth yellow or brown and also contribute to gum disease
- Poor oral hygiene, including not flossing or brushing regularly. Over time, plaque will build up and turn your teeth a dull yellow color
- Drinking dark liquids, including coffee, tea, and red wine, can stain your teeth. The heavy pigmentation of these drinks makes the stains deep, and often they’ll leave wavy stains on the enamel. If you can’t stop drinking these, just use a straw when drinking to reduce additional discoloration
In addition to everyday habits, teeth may also become discolored due to aging, certain medications, genetics, trauma to a tooth, or excessive fluoride exposure during tooth development. During your consultation, we’ll identify the cause of your discoloration and recommend the whitening treatment that’s right for you.
Why Choose Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening offers several advantages over store-bought whitening strips, toothpaste, and over-the-counter kits. Because your treatment is performed under the supervision of a dental professional, you’ll receive stronger whitening agents, customized care, and more consistent results while minimizing the risk of tooth sensitivity or gum irritation.
At Dental Excellence, we tailor every whitening treatment to your smile and your goals. Whether you’re preparing for a special event or simply want to refresh your appearance, professional whitening can deliver faster, longer-lasting results than many at-home products.
How Often Should I Whiten My Teeth?
Depending on how stained your teeth are and how strong the enamel is, you may need just one appointment or several. If the enamel is thinner, the dentist may opt to leave the gel on for a shorter time. Or, if you have significant staining on your teeth, you may need multiple visits to get the shade you desire.
Each patient of ours is different, so we offer custom consults for each whitening procedure.
The longevity of your whitening results depends on your daily habits. Drinking coffee, tea, red wine, or using tobacco products can cause stains to return more quickly. Many patients maintain their brighter smiles by practicing good oral hygiene, scheduling regular dental cleanings, and occasionally touching up their whitening treatment as recommended by their dentist.
Are There Any Side Effects For Teeth Whitening?
There are no side effects to teeth whitening for most people, and even for those that experience them, they’re mild. The main effect of the procedure is temporary tooth sensitivity for people who have thinner enamel or naturally more sensitive teeth that may make it uncomfortable to eat or drink things that are very hot or very cold.
If this happens to you, there are a few things you can do to alleviate it:
- Switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. Many brands advertise sensitive teeth alternatives, or you can ask your dentist for a recommendation.
- Chew sugar-free gum. Saliva can protect the teeth from very hot or very cold temperatures, and when you chew sugar-free gum, you’ll stimulate saliva production and help protect your mouth
- Talk to your dentist if it’s especially unpleasant. They may have alternatives for teeth whitening or may reduce the time you spend for each round of the procedure and how often you have it done
Can I Do Teeth Whitening at Home?
Many dentists may offer an at-home whitening procedure, using the custom-made mold of your teeth and a special gel. However, when you’re considering products in stores, it’s better to talk to your dentist first. Some of them may be too strong and damage the enamel of your teeth, leading to problems down the line.
While whitening strips, LED kits, and whitening toothpaste are widely available, they often produce slower, less predictable results than professional treatment. Many over-the-counter products also use one-size-fits-all trays that may not evenly whiten your teeth or adequately protect your gums.
Beyond the potential damage to your teeth, many of these products may not work or may need many applications even to notice a difference.
There are other risks, too. If your teeth aren’t healthy, over-the-counter teeth whitening kits can pose great risks to your oral health. Cavities have to be treated before starting the process, and only a dentist can discover and treat a cavity. You may also damage your gums, leaving them more susceptible to gingivitis and gum disease or receding gums.
